Kenny Chesney Tampa Tailgate Party – Join Us!

June 2nd the Brothers Of The Sun Tour featuring Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and Jake Owen roll into Tampa Florida. Chesney shows are legendary for their all day tailgating parties and this one will be no different.

Myself and Shawn from Coastlines & Tan Lines are organizing a little tailgating group. All Castaways are invited! Come join the party, rum drinks will be flowing and Chesney will be playing.

Mishka’s Anything Anytime Anywhere New Mini Album

Last week reggae star Mishka released a mini album called, “Anything Anytime Anywhere – EP.” If you’re new to the foot tapping beats of Mishka, I’ve written about him before here and here. If you’re wanting a crash course on Mishka’s music–picture yourself sitting in a beach chair on a perfect swath of sand in the Caribbean, sweat dripping from your rum drink and a gentle breeze blowing across your face. As you push your toes deeper into the sand, you think to yourself that it’s impossible to be anymore relaxed than you are at this very second. Now take that feeling and put it to music, that’s Mishka. It’s the audio interpretation of…everything be irie mon.

I just downloaded the album and it’s more of the classic Mishka style that you’re use to. The trademark smooth flow continues to shine and the lyrics continue to inspire.

Music: An Island State Of Mind In Key West

My favorite song on the new Pirate Sessions album is easily Island State of Mind. Its free flowing lyrics echo days of relaxing with a glass full of the island lifestyle. Rum filled drinks, bikini clad sun kissed beauties and spending time in an island state of mind, isn’t that the goal of every Castaway? This song definitely takes you there.

Key West, a place where it’s nearly impossible not to be in an island state of mind, put on its 17th annual Songwriters Festival a couple weeks ago. Over a hundred artist played on the island, but watching The Pirate Sessions perform on the Fury catamaran was the highlight of the 5 day music binge. At least it was for this self proclaimed scallywag.

The boat filled up, the band set up their equipment and the free beer, margaritas and wine flowed freely. Wouldn’t be much of a pirate party ship if it didn’t right? I picked out a good spot to set up shop and started shooting as the boat began its lazy jaunt out of the marina. What the camera caught was the bands first song, a cover of Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds that transitioned into their new Island State Of Mind. Five minutes in and the entire boat could tell this was going to be a kick as time with a rocking band, beautiful views and cold drinks.

The guys put on a great show the entire night, and Hollywood couldn’t have created a better sunset. As the sky grew dark the music grew loud. People danced, people sang and every soul aboard was most certainly in an…island state of mind.

Break Out The Rum! Pirate Sessions II Has Arrived

You Castaways are going to love this one. The Pirate Sessions II album dropped yesterday and is quickly climbing the iTunes charts. The new album contains 16 songs, the eight original Pirate Sessions songs and eight new Pirate Sessions II songs. The songs…yeah, they’re damn good. I was able to hear most of them last Friday night in Key West. The band set up shop on the front of a catamaran and played their songs as we sailed past Mallory Square and into a spectacular Key West sunset. Couldn’t have been a cooler experience. I’ll write more on that later, but first here are the new songs from Pirate Sessions II.

I was told about a contest they are having that gives away a trip to St. John. I didn’t see any information in the CD that I got from them but will let you know more when I find out. Something about them flying you down and doing a concert on Cinnamon Bay. Can you say legendary!

Jesse Rice is the lead local and wrote or co-wrote all of the songs. He is joined by Brain Kelley, Chase Rice, Tyler Hubbard, Steve Bryant, Mike Durham, Curt Ryle, Mike Severs, Gary Smith and Wanda Vick. If you liked the first album you’re going to fall in love with this one as well. It’s professionally produced and the lyrics have heart and feeling. Nothing is forced or contrived, everything just flows and puts you in that island state of mind. Sort of like the Plantation I’m sipping on. Sweet sweet goodness.

Artists Performing at the 2012 Key West Songwriters Festival – Help Me Choose!

Today I arrive in Key West via the speedy, boat drink serving, Key West Express. The island is packed with singer songwriters ready to play their songs on the beach, hotels and historic bars of Key West. Problem is there are way to may artists to see. So how do you choose? Many of the performers I’m not very familiar with, so choosing is almost like throwing darts with a blindfold on.

Here is a list of all of the performers. Can you give me some suggestions on what acts are a must see?

“The Beach” by – Chris Rehm, Performed At The 2011 Key West Songwriters Festival

Chris Rehm, A.K.A. Key West Chris–is a singer songwriter that’s been entertaining folks in South Florida since 1996. He has a diverse songwriting background and is a performer at the 2012 Key West Songwriters Festival.

Here’s a blurb from Chris’s website describing his love for the place he calls home…Key West.

In 2008, Chris moved to Key West, a place he’s always dreamed of living. His words say it best: “I appreciate all I’ve done and that has been awarded to me and I have no regrets whatsoever, about anything from the past.” He says with an easy smile. “However, I kind of wish I moved here years ago! I love this town and have no intentions of ever leaving!” Chris is a believer that there are certain geographic regions which stimulate the arts and creativity, more than others and Key West is one of them. “Here, sometimes the ideas come so quickly you can’t take them all in.” He may have something here. We know of a few writers over the years that felt the same way. Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams are two that come to mind. There really must be something in the air down there.

Watch as Chris performs his song “The Beach,” on the beach, at the Southern Most Hotel. Live music on the beach, it’s an atmosphere that’s hard to beat.

An Explosion Of Live Muisc is Decending on Key West

A week from now famous singer songwriters will fill the historic bars of Key West. So many artists that it will be literally impossible to see them all. Take a look at the schedule and you’ll see what I mean. The 17th annual Key West Songwriters Festival hits the Conch Republic with the force of a hurricane. A hurricane whistling sweet sweet music.

I’ve been excited about this festival for months now, but wasn’t going to be able to make it because of a planned trip to an island of a different name. Well that trip fell apart. No need to go into details because we Castaways are about the positive vibes. But that did free up my time and now the Songwriters Festival is a go!

Now I’m frantically trying to figure out all the details; what artists are playing where, do I take the Key West Express ferry or drive, and where the hell am I going to find a hotel. The hotel situation has me most worried. This is a pretty popular festival, and the island will be packed with people who have reserved their rooms months in advance. If any of you Castaways have any hotel hook-ups on island let me know. Otherwise I’m not above sleeping in my car and jumping into the waters off of Smathers Beach to clean up! Can’t be scared right, especially when you here who’s performing on a sunset cruise Friday (May 4th) night.

As I was reading through the schedule of performances, one caught my eye. As you know I’m a big fan of the Pirate Sessions crew, as are many of you. I was looking to see when and where they are playing, and it turns out they will be jammin’ on a Fury catamaran during a sunset sail. I’m not sure if epic is even the right word to use. Here’s a little taste of what it’s going to be like.

I interviewed Pirate Sessions a couple months ago, (interview here) and you can tell these guys like to have fun. There’s going to be some plundering happening on Key West harbor for sure.

Corey Smith – If I Could Do It Again

Loading up the car, road tripping it to Panama City Beach with your friends to cause trouble and make memories, sounds like something anyone of us would or has done. That’s why you’re going to love this Corey Smith song. It’s all about connecting to the music and I have a feeling this song will connect with the Castaway audience.

The song, “If I Could Do It Again” tells the story of friends who hit the sand of Panama Beach, hittin’ on women, passing out on the sand and telling the cops to f**k off. That doesn’t sound like something you would ever do does it? Cutting loose is something we all love to do and deserve to do. That’s why this song is going to strike a cord with most people. Plus he’s a bald guy, so I connect with this guy on a few different levels!

I’ve Got A Beach In My Backyard – Brent Burns

Music keeps us sane.

You’re sitting in your office, crunching numbers, staring at reports and filling out paperwork. It’s important work, but the mind needs to release the tension throughout the day. Because you can’t drink rum all day while at work, music is a great release. I don’t know what I would do if I wasn’t able to listen to Radio Margaritaville or No Shoes Radio during the day. It soothes the soul.

Last week I was typing away on the keyboard and the song called “I’ve Got a Beach In My Backyard” by Brent Burns came on. It pops up on Radio Margaritaville every once and awhile and I caught myself singing along. After the song I noticed my energy level was up, projects got done faster and I had a strong urge to drink rum on the beach. Two of those things are very good for job performance. One, not so much.

Bio

Brent Burns is a well known Trop-Rocker and has been putting out songs for quite sometime. In 2011 Brent won Trop Rock Music Association
Entertainer of the Year and Songwriter of the Year. Not to shabby. It also looks like Brent will be playing at the Key West Songwriters Festival the first weekend in May. His other tour dates can be found here.

Brent Burns was born in Oklahoma, raised in Arizona and arrived in Gulf Shores, Alabama in 1972. This son of the desert has become the poet laureate of the beach. In 2006, Burns was named “Official Music Ambassador of the Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau.” In 2008, Burns won three awards in the first ever Trop Rock Music Awards. Burns won “Entertainer of the Year,” “CD of the Year (for “Ragtops and Flip Flops”)” and a special WAVE award for his charitable work. 2010 brought more Trop Rock Music awards, CD and Song of the Year for “I’ve Got A Beach in My Backyard” and Songwriter of the Year.

Burns was all over the national scene with his songs and videos, “Pain At The Pump” and “Drill, Drill, Drill.” After the videos were posted on You Tube, CNN interviewed Burns and used “Pain At The Pump” in their special “4 Bucks! What’s Next? America’s Fuel Crisis.” When the BP oil spill struck his beloved Gulf Coast in April 2010, Burns took the oil giant to task with his song, “Drill, Drill, Drill.” The song and video were featured on CNN’s Headline News. Burns first tapped into the American public’s anger over rising fuel costs in response to the oil shortages of the 1970s and 80s. Burns wrote the hit song, “Cheaper Crude or No More Food.” The song sold 200,000 copies the day it was released and climbed the Billboard Charts after radio commentator Paul Harvey played it three times. It is the first and only song ever played in Harvey’s nearly 50 years of radio broadcasting.

Burns’ fame continued with appearances on Real People, The Mike Douglas Show, and Hee-Haw. Burns was featured on the front page of the Sunday New York Times Entertainment Section, as well as in articles appearing in the Chicago Tribune, LA Times, Arizona Republic, Newsweek, US Magazine, and Billboard Magazine. Besides his Top 40 hit, “Cheaper Crude or No More Food,” Burns has had five other nationally charted records.

A twice wounded, Purple Heart winning combat veteran, Burns also has the distinction of being the first American entertainer to perform for troops overseas after the tragedy of September 11, 2001. Burns’ musical career has taken him to Italy, Australia, Mexico and coast to coast in the US.

Burns’ philanthropic projects have continued throughout the years. A portion of his CD sales goes to charities including the American Cancer Society, Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, and Habitat for Humanity.
