The Mexican Cutie Cocktail, How It Got Here I Might Have A Clue

After one sip, you’ll be saying “Uno mas porfavor!”

Man am I thirst. After the all day Carl Grooms Rumologist party we had last Saturday, rum and even a cold beer just didn’t sound good. Today is Wednesday, Boat Drinks day, and now everything sounds good. Jumping off the wagon!

I saw that our friend Carl didn’t win the Tommy Bahama Rumologist contest. Congrats to the winner Jack Terry, all the finalist were great and all of them would have made one hell of a Rumologist. Thanks for your help in voting for our buddy, much appreciated. Now lets talk cocktails shall we.

How does that Margaritaville verse go again…

Don’t know the reason
I stayed here all season
With nothing to show but this brand new tattoo
But it’s a really beauty
A Mexican Cutie
How it got here I haven’t a clue

Let’s name a drink after that drunken tattoo that Jimmy loves to sing about so much, The Mexican Cutie. You know the drink has to have tequila in it, and since we are talking about Mr. Buffett I suspect we need to use Margaritaville Tequila. Then let’s add some lemon, little bit of grenadine, squirt of Club Soda and be done with it. I give you the Mexican Cutie.

Mexican Cutie Cocktail

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. Margaritaville Premium Tequila Oro
  • Juice of half a Lemon
  • 4 dashes of Grenadine
  • 1/2 oz. of Club Soda

Mixing Instructions: Fill shaker with ice. Add first 3 ingredients. Shake and strain into chilled cocktail glass. Add Club Soda. Garnish with Lemon Slice. Raise glass and toast.

Not a bad little drink. Not all drinks on this island blog have to be rum, a little bit of tequila tossed into the mix makes for a happy sailor as well.

Cheers Castaways!

Trying To Reason With Hurricane Season – An Eye On Irene

It looks like Irene is going to be storm to keep an eye on. I’ve heard that our friends in the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico took a lashing from Irene yesterday and last night. I hope everything is okay with everyone there.

I’m not one to stir the drama pot, and don’t think Irene is going to be too much of a concern, but when you’re home sits in the middle of the cone of probability, or whatever the hell they call that thing, it’s good to keep a weather eye on the horizon. That being said, I think I’ll be heading to the store today for some hurricane provisions; water, canned food, beer, batteries and maybe some more beer. Maybe the ingredients to make one of these tasty cocktails as well.

Being that today is Music Monday, I thought Mr. Buffett’s classic “Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season” was an appropriate choice today. Here is a descent live video of the song and below are the lyrics.

Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season Lyrics

Squalls out on the gulf stream
Big storm’s comin’ soon
I passed out in my hammock
And God I slept ’til way past noon
Stood up and tried to focus
I hoped I wouldn’t have to look far
I knew I could use a Bloody Mary
So I stumbled next door to the bar

Chorus:
And now I must confess, I could use some rest
I can’t run at this pace very long
Yes it’s quite insane, I think it hurts my brain
But it cleans me out and then I can go on

There’s somethin’ about this Sunday
It’s a most peculiar gray
Strollin’ down the avenue that’s known as A1A
Feelin’ tired, then I got inspired
I knew that it wouldn’t last long
So all alone I walked back home
Sat on my beach and then I made up this song

Chorus:
And now I must confess, I could use some rest
I can’t run at this pace very long
Yes it’s quite insane, I think it hurts my brain
But then it cleans me out and then I can go on

Well the wind is blowin’ harder now
Fifty knots or thereabouts
There’s white caps on the ocean
And I’m watchin’ for waterspouts
It’s time to close the shutters
It’s time to go inside
In a week I’ll be in gay Paris
That’s a mighty long airplane ride

Chorus:
And now I must confess, I could use some rest
I can’t run at this pace very long
Yes it’s quite insane, I think it hurts my brain
But it cleans me out and then I can go on

Coda:
Yes it cleans me out and then I can go on

This has to be one of my top 5 Buffett songs. It’s nearly impossible to pick favorites with his huge catalog of songs, but this one has to be right near the top for me.

To all our friends in the Bahamas, Florida and the rest of you in Irene’s path, we will be thinking about you. If the storm turns into anything much to worry about I’ll keep you posted on the details happening around my area. Until then, I have hurricane party provisions to think about.

Cheers,

Tripping Over Shrimpboat Sound, Jimmy Buffett’s Key West Studio

We were walking form Duval down Caroline Street, took a left down another street to get to the marina to jump on a sunset cruise and there it was. Everyone else in our group walked right by this unassuming building, but my buddy JR and I  stopped right in our tracks. What could make us do that? How about a little Buffett magic.

There it stood, Shrimpboat Sound, Jimmy Buffett’s recording studio in Key West. Not much to it really, just a small white building sitting in the corner of the marina. No neon signs screaming “Buffett Lore Here”, just simple, unassuming and special. Hundreds of people, even Buffett fans, walk by the building ever day not knowing the magic that has happen inside.

Here’s what Jimmy has to say about Shrimpboat Sound from a story on Margaritaville.com

The Studio

Key West was always the natural choice for doing this project. I have spent enough time in studios in bad climates trying to make magic. Shrimpboat Sound was an attempt to put a unique but very functional studio into a place with atmosphere. You can’t get much more atmosphere than sitting on the porch at Shrimpboat and watching the world go by. Shrimpboat is housed in an old shrimp storage cooler where the boats would unload and deposit their catch (thus the name). It was put together by Ross Ritto who was my soundman on the road for over twenty years and now owns Sound Image, one of the top sound companies in the country. Over the years, we have recorded nearly a dozen albums at Shrimpboat and more recently the studio has been used by an eclectic group of artists from Billy Corgan to Toby Keith who like the sound that we have come up with.

Here is a cool behind the scenes video taken at Shrimpboat sounds with Jimmy and Terry and Staci of Miami’s KISS Country Radio.

I walked around the build one time thinking about history that has happened inside. We couldn’t hang out long because we were running late for our cruise, but I do see another chance to check out the studio in September when I’m down there for the Conched in Key West bar crawl that we are organizing.

Cheers to tripping over a little slice of the Buffett world.

Kenny Chesney Joins Jimmy Buffett On Stage in Nashville

Kenny Chesney was a special guest of Jimmy Buffett when the “Welcome to Fin Land” tour pulled into Bridgestone Arena in Nashville this past Saturday.  The two jammed out with “Come Monday” and “Back Where I Come From” (featuring Mac and Chesney).

I don’t know about you guys, but this would be one of those, “Pinch me, is this really happening” moments.

Here are a couple videos of the show when Kenny was on stage.

Come Monday – Jimmy Buffett & Kenny Chesney

Back Where I Come From – Kenny, Mac & Jimmy

Thank you to ChesneyWorld.com and BuffettWorld.com for letting us know about this great moment. Thanks to Lisa, a ChesneyWorld reader, for the videos and photo!

A Bikini Model, A Buffett Concert and Plenty of Rum

If that headline didn’t grab you I don’t know what will. Poke with a sharp stick maybe.

Our tailgating friends over at Conch Republic Bikini posted their description of the shenanigans that transpired at the West Palm Beach Jimmy Buffett tailgating party. It’s hard not to have a good time when you’re hanging out with a bikini model, Jimmy is blaring on the radio and everyone you meet is a new best friend. Man I love Buffett concerts.

Follow this link to Conch Republic Bikini’s blog – Coastlines & Tan Lines to read the full story and watch the great video that captured the fun craziness. I think you will even see me playing the part of a highly professional light holding dude.

Parrot Head Paradise – Bikini Tail Gate

I know a lot of Parrotheads read this site, so let me know if you spot yourself in the video!

Jimmy Buffett West Palm Beach Concert Review

Thousands of parrotheads pulled into West Palm Beach Saturday, all looking for that “One Particular Harbor”. They gathered in the parking lots hours before showtime, building make shift tiki bars and sharing “Boat Drinks”. Not a stranger in sight. It was as hot as a “Volcano”, the sky was blue and I remember thinking, man I love these “Floridays”, now someone fix this pirate a “Cheeseburger in Paradise” before I grow a “Pencil Thin Mustache”!

In short, the Buffett “Welcome to Fin Land” concert in West Palm was outstanding. Jimmy was clicking on all cylinders with topical adlibs, funny stories and he even cracked on himself for the now famous faceplant off the stage in Australia. My favorite adlib was when singing Fruitcakes, Buffett tossed in the lyric, “Fruitcakes getting f**ked by the oil tycoons”. Yes, Jimmy dropped the F-bomb and it sent the flocks of parrotheads into a roar.

The tailgating scene did not disappoint. We pulled through the gates a little after noon, and started setting up our plot of paradise. We met up with Carl from Conch Republic Bikinis before hitting the lots so we could waste away in Margaritaville together.

Jimmy Buffett Tailgating

Myself and Carl, Just a Couple Castaways.

Carl was the proud owner of a huge luxurious tent. Yes past tense. This thing was huge, it was the Ritz-Carlton of tents . It had a cupola on top and extendable wings on two sides for additional shade. Wings indeed.  Not long after we set it up a moderate wind gust picked the tent up and tossed it on to the car and parrotheads behind us. Sorry guys! Bent and broken, the tent was no more. Sorry to pour salt on the wound Carl, makes for a good story though!

The colorful and creative people in the lots were great as they always are. Everyone was extremely friendly, sharing food, rum, beer and games. Here are some photos of the fun.

As you can see by the photos, good times were had by the masses. One little thing that added a dash of spice to the tailgating was that Carl had a model show up to sport some of his bikinis and take photos with some of the interesting people and creative tailgate setups. You think that might have generated just a smidge of attention…umm, yeah. I even played flash blub carrying dude for a little bit, but was quickly distracted by a competitive game of corn hole and beers with two guys from Miami.

While I was walking into the concert fellow Castaway Craig S. recognized my ugly mug. Craig is an active commenter on the RSR Facebook page and as soon as he introduced himself I knew exactly who he was, even in my pineapple and rum state of mind. It was great to meet you and your friends/family Craig, enjoy the koozie mate.

I get through the gate of the Cruzan Amphitheater and find the closest beer vendor. I quickly grab two 24oz. Bud Lights and try to find my buddy JR who came in earlier. Difficult to do when carrying two jumbo beers and a paper ticket.

Jimmy was phenomenal, plain and simple. He sounded great, joked with the crowd and played some great great songs. Here is a clip of Buffett performing “Fins”.

Here is the set list from the concert. (Thank you BuffettWorld.com)

Barefoot and bald, Jimmy held us in his hand for over two hours and sent us home feeling high as a kite, minus the illegal drugs. I hope Jimmy never finds that salt shaker he misplaced many years ago, because as long as he keeps searching for it, we will keep helping him find it, and find ourselves along the way. Cheers to you Jimmy, the original Castaway.

If you were at the West Palm show we would love to hear what you thought.

Jimmy Buffett In West Palm Beach Tomorrow – Join The Fun! Fins Up!

You got Fins to the Left, Fins to the Right, You’re the Only Bait in Town.

Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band brings the “Welcome to Fin Land” tour to the coastal city of West Palm Beach tomorrow. This feathery parrothead and friends will be hitting the road early tomorrow morning for a trip across the state to attend the circus known as a Jimmy Buffett concert.

You’ll see crazy things like these folks.

Jimmy Buffett Tailgating

Jimmy Buffett Tailgating Ft. Lauderdale

Then you’ll see fools like this.

Jimmy Buffett Concert

Buffett Tailgating Fun

But this is just a small glimpse into the Buffett experience.

If you’ve never been to a Buffett show, shame on you. It’s an experience that’s not to be missed. Hell, I don’t even have tickets to this show, I’m just going to hit the tailgate parties and see if I can’t scare some people out of an extra lawn ticket. On a wing and a prayer, that’s how this pirate rolls.

I’m not sure if the 2010 Ft. Lauderdale Buffett concert was my last, or the if the “Save The Ocean”, Gulf Shores beach concert was the last show of his I’ve been to. They all start to blur together with old age and a margarita soaked noodle.

If you’re going to the “Welcome To Fin Land” show tomorrow in West Palm come find us! Easier said than done, I know. I’ll have a Castaway hat on and will be hanging out with a rather tall gent with a Landshark tattoo on his chest, which I’m sure he’ll be proudly displaying. I’ll also be tailgating with Carl from Conch Republic Bikinis. I believe he is having one of his sexy models there showing off the bikinis, so we shouldn’t be to hard to find.

I’ll be posting photos of the fun on the RumShopRyan Facebook page and on Twitter if you’d like to follow along.

Hope to see some of you guys there! Fins Up!

Christmas in the Caribbean – J. Buffett Knows the Way!

Christmas in the Caribbean. Lots of presents everywhere. We don’t live in a hurry. Send away for mistletoe. It’s Christmas in the Caribbean. Got everything but snow. -Jimmy Buffett

Call me crazy, but I think steel drums and Christmas go together like sand and sun. I love Jimmy Buffett’s Christmas album “Christmas Island“. It does the mind, body and soul good.

A lot of people choose to trade in the coats and snow for SPF 30 and blue ocean lagoons during the holidays. Pretty damn good idea right? A couple people on the RumShopRyan Facebook page have let me know that they will be traveling to the Caribbean for their Christmas vacation. While I probably can’t fit into their luggage I found myself wanting to tag along. Next year maybe the year I pass on the bone chilling trip to Kansas City for a destination that has ice in tropical boat drinks instead of all over the ground.  If you have wishes and dreams of spending your Christmas in the Caribbean let our friend Mr. Buffett here show you they way.

Christmas in the Caribbean – Jimmy Buffett

Down load Jimmy Buffett’s Christmas Island

Christmas Island - Jimmy Buffett

Christmas in the Caribbean Lyrics

It’s Christmas in the Caribbean
Snowbirds fill the air
It’s Christmas in the Caribbean
Lots of presents everywhere
We don’t live in a hurry
Send away for mistletoe
It’s Christmas in the Caribbean
Got everything but snow

Lights are blowing in the palm trees
Stockings hanging from the mast
Santa riding on a dolphin
Don’t you want to make it
Don’t you want to make it last

Chorus:
It’s Christmas in the Caribbean
Snowbirds fill the air
It’s Christmas in the Caribbean
Lots of presents everywhere
We don’t live in a hurry
Send away for mistletoe
It’s Christmas in the Caribbean
Got everything but snow
Snow?

Suntanned children sleeping
Hoping Santa will come true
Christmas morning marlin leaping
Oh it’s papa’s birthday
Mister Buffett’s birthday too!

Chorus:
It’s Christmas in the Caribbean
Snowbirds fill the air
It’s Christmas in the Caribbean
Good feelings everywhere
We don’t live in a hurry
Send away for mistletoe
It’s Christmas in the Caribbean
Got everything but snow

Christmas in the Caribbean
Got everything but snow
Christmas in the Caribbean
Got everything but snow
Christmas in the Caribbean
Got everything but snow
Christmas in the Caribbean
Got everything but snow

Got everything but snow

A Pirate Heads North

Today I head north. It’s going to be cold. It’s going to be gray. Chance of snow…highly likely. This warm blooded Florida boy isn’t all to thrilled with this trip to Kansas, but it will be good to spend some time with the family this holiday season.

I love the fact that I’m from Kansas. It really has a lot to offer. It just doesn’t have year round warm temperatures, white sand beaches and that great big ocean. I am looking forward to a big Chipotle burrito (No, the Ft. Myers area doesn’t have one yet) and I get to see my beloved Jayhawks whip up on some poor team in the Sprint Center. So the cold weather sacrifice will be worth it.

I know a lot of you Castaways live where the cold weather puts a damper on your tropical souls. What do you do to get yourself through the winter months? What do you do when it’s twenty degrees and the hockey games on and nobody cares cause they are way too far gone? Do you start screamin’ boat drinks, something to keep us all warm?! Don’t go shootin’ holes in freezers folks, just pour yourself a stiff boat drink!

Right Time, Right Place. A Moment With A Hero

Right time, right place. Looking back at some of your fondest memories, can you recall a memory when you shared a special moment with a hero? I know heroes come in all shapes, sizes and professions. I’m talking about musical heroes here.

I was combing through the overwhelming video library that is YouTube, searching for random Caribbean clips. All the sudden, I found myself staring starry eyed at the screen watching a larger than life personality entertain a small intimate group of people in a bar. I saw magic. Right time, right place.

Jimmy Buffett is known for popping into bars and restaurants to play a couple tunes for the lucky guests. That’s exactly what happened to some lucky people on St. Barts. One thing that makes him great is the way he pulls you into his songs. He is a master storyteller and knows how to seduce his audience. Watch these videos as Buffett plays an impromptu gig at the BAZ Bar on St. Barts. Right time, right place.

Buffett Sings “No Woman No Cry” in St. Barts

Buffett Sings “One Particular Harbor” in St. Barts

Pretty amazing memories for those lucky few. Do you see how he draws his audience in? Those people are going to go back to their lives and jobs feeling like a million bucks. They are going to have stories to tell for a lifetime. They are going to have memories so thick they’ll have to wipe them away from their faces.

One thing I’d like to do before growing old and gray is to see one of my heroes in a small intimate setting like this. Electricity flying through the air, child like giddiness on everyone’s face and a shared magical moment with friends, strangers and one hero. That’s what I want. That’s what I wish for. I hope for that right time, right place moment.

BuffettWorld & ChesneyWorld Interview

Start up that margarita blender and turn on some steel drum music because Josh Martin is going to tell us tales of Kenny Chesney and Jimmy Buffett.

Josh is the owner/operator of two very popular fan sites, BuffettWorld.com and ChesneyWorld.com. These two sites keep us fans up-to-date on all the breaking news about these two entertainers. I was able to lure Josh into an interview with the promise of future margarita rounds bought by yours truly. Enjoy the journey. Cheers!

1. You are the owner & operator of two very popular websites, BuffettWorld.com and ChesneyWorld.com, how long have you had the site sand what made you come up with the idea?

My buddy first introduced me to Jimmy Buffett when I was a sophomore in high school (2000). The more and more I listened to his music the more and more I loved it, and after going to my first show in St. Louis I was hooked. I was very into computers and had been fiddling with making websites so I decided to make a Buffett website. It started as a hobby, but after a couple of years I bought the domain name buffettworld.com and, with the help of my contributor Justin, added a ton of new information. The traffic really grew in 2004 and has grown exponentially since. It’s now the largest resource for all things Jimmy Buffett on the net.

A couple years back I noticed that Kenny was getting more and more of a following. He had become the biggest act in country music and one of the biggest tours in all of music. But there wasn’t a fan website out there for him like there was BuffettWorld for Jimmy Buffett. I had been thinking about creating a Chesney site for a while, and in May of 2008 I decided to replicate what I’d done for Buffett and created ChesneyWorld.com. It grew very quickly and I’ve been surprised and thrilled by its success.

There are a great group of fans for both Kenny and Jimmy and I’m very gracious for those that come to the “Worlds” to get their fix.

2. What is your “Boat Drink” of choice when you are relaxing?

My drink of choice is usually a Bud Light Lime. I also love a good frozen margarita. I guess I’m just sort of a lime guy when it comes to boat drinks.

3. Which singer/song writer do you have more in common with, Mr. Buffett or Mr. Chesney?

I feel like I have a lot in common with both of them. I share their love of sports. I have a laid back, easy going personality, and love fishing and boating. I would probably relate more to Chesney as we’re closer in age, but Buffett and I share one very strong passion, and that’s flying. My day job is corporate pilot and I love it. Jimmy Buffett is a very accomplished pilot and owns several airplanes. When (hopefully not “if”) I do get to meet him someday, I envision it being at an airport where we’ll chat about airplanes and our love of flying.

4. What is your favorite Caribbean Island?

I’ve only been to a couple, but I do love the backside of St. Thomas, away from the city where it’s a little quieter. I’d love to visit St. John. which is Kenny’s home away from home, or St. Barts where Jimmy spends a lot of his time.

5. How many Buffett and Chesney shows have you been too? What was your most memorable experience?

I just went to my 10th Buffett show back in April. A big group of friends have gone every year for the past decade except one. The group gets bigger and bigger every year and it’s such a good time. Easily the most memorable experience was Dallas 2003 when I was fortunate enough to sit second row dead center. At the end of the show, Jimmy always throws his wrist bands into the crowd and he threw one of them towards us and all hands went up for it… the people in front of me thought it fell to the ground so they all leaned forward but the wrist band had been knocked into the air and landed on the back of the guy in front of me as he leaned forward. With the quickest motion I’ve probably ever made I snatched it off of his back. I’ve now got it in a frame on the wall with a picture of Jimmy wearing it from that show.

I’ve seen Kenny 5 times. The first was in 1999 at a small venue here in my hometown. It was pre-No Shoes, No Shirts, No Problems so it was cool to compare him then to later shows after he underwent his “island transformation.” Earlier this year I was able to attend the CMT Crossroads taping in Nashville with Steve Miller. That was a very special experience. It was neat to see the show when it aired on CMT, knowing what all happened behind the scenes to make the show what it was.

6. This will be a hard question, but what are your top 2 favorite songs from both artists?

This is a very hard question, particularly with Buffett songs. I’m glad you asked for top two and not just my number one. For Kenny, it’s “Me and You” and “Back Where I Come From.” “Me and You” is my wife and I’s song. It was the first song we danced to at our wedding. And “Back Where I Come From” has always been a favorite since the first time I heard it back in the 90′s. It’s been a real treat this year as Buffett’s sang it on tour a few times, including the show that we were at. As for Buffett, I’d probably go with “When The Coast is Clear” and “One Particular Harbour.” “When The Coast is Clear” is the first song that Jimmy and Mac McAnally ever wrote together. It’s just such a great tune, and I love it even more after Buffett changed the words to reflect the situation in the gulf. And with “One Particular Harbour”, Jimmy always says that everybody should have that one particular harbour that they can go to and feel at home and have a good time. It’s a staple at his shows and I’ve just always loved it since the first time I heard it.

7. What does the future hold for BuffettWorld and ChesneyWorld?

Earlier this year both sites underwent a major redesign that took a significant amount of time. Since that’s been accomplished there aren’t any big plans for either site right now. We’ll just keep on providing the best and latest news, while utilizing social media like Twitter and Facebook.

8. Last question. If you were stranded on a beautiful tropical island in the middle of nowhere and could bring 3 things with you, what would they be?

I’d bring my wife and two kids (daughter Peyton (3) and son Paxton (1 month)). I couldn’t imagine life without them. If you were gracious enough to count them as one, then I’d also bring along a good book and a computer so I could still keep everyone up to date on Kenny and Jimmy :-)

I want to thank Josh for taking the time do the interview.  I know I will continue going to BuffettWorld and ChesneyWorld for my escapism fix.

Have a great weekend Castaways!

Cheers,

RumShopRyan
