Are hurricanes good for business? Of course not right, stupid question. I bet you a cold rum punch that if you ask that same question to the people at the Weather Channel you might get a different answer.

Not only were people glued to the TV watching what Irene was going to do, they were also jumping on the internet, searching for Caribbean webcams. RumShopRyan.com saw a huge jump in traffic while Irene was churning through the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Turks & Caicos and the Bahamas. People wanted to see live feeds of the storm’s furry.

I like to post Caribbean webcams because I want to show you guys the tranquil beaches and the dancing palms, but I guess seeing a storm rage is interesting as well.

In saying all that, I’ll keep bringing you new webcams from around the Caribbean. This week’s island webcam comes from the Mexican paradise of Cozumel. The cam is perched on a building at the Puerta Maya cruise ship port.

The Puerta Maya pier and cruise center is located on the southwestern part of Cozumel, approximately five miles south of San Miguel, the island’s largest city.

This image will refresh every 60 seconds.

I haven’t been to Cozumel yet (seems like everyone else has though). I hear the diving is good and the beaches are white and alluring. Margarita in the sun? Yes please!

Cheers,

Some call it Woman Island, some say Island of Women, however you choose to translate it, the ancient and true name is Isla Mujeres.

An island of women, now wouldn’t that be a fantasy land treat. Back to reality boys. Isla Mujeres got its name because it was the Mayan sanctuary to goddess Ixchel for about a thousand years. This tiny Mexican Caribbean gem is located just off the Yucatan, a few miles north of Cancun. It now lures people to its white sand beaches and slow motion island vibe. A place to unwind from the craziness of Cancun.

Take a moment and stare at the photo above. That is a lonely beach chair staring right back at you, and if it could speak it would say that it wants you to come sit, take a load off, enjoy the beautiful Caribbean vistas. Then when you think things can’t get any better, some one will walk up and offer you an ice cold Sol or Corona. Ahhhh, the life.

At least that’s what I see when I stare at this photo. If you’ve been a regular reader of this blog then I’m guessing it’s saying something very similar to you as well.

Enjoy your Friday Castaways!

Have you ever heard of the island Isla Mujeres? It’s a small island just off the coast of Mexico north of Cancun. Sign you up right? Yeah, me too. They are throwing a big party called the “Island Time Fishing Festival“. The event takes place February 15th – 19th and will include a Sailfishing Tournament, K9K Road Race, a beach bash, an Island Time Dinner Concert, Nightly Entertainment at JAX Beach, the Soggy Peso Happy Hour and the Isla Open Sand Volleyball Tournament.

This is the second year for this event, its a charitable event for “the Little Yellow Schoolhouse” here on the island, a school that serves local special needs children. The school totally function on donations.

I know it’s short notice, but if you happened to be in the area you might want to check it out.

For more information visit their website at www.islandtimefishingfestival.com

Here is a bit of background on the Festival

Several North American friends that now live in Isla Mujeres, Mexico were reflecting on how they could contribute to the Island community who have made living here on Isla Mujeres so enjoyable. The idea of fishing and fun was discussed and the concept of the First Annual Isla Mujeres Fishing Festival was born. The plan was to take advantage of the incredible sailfishing that the island has to offer and create an event that was like no other on the island. An event that would rival the best charity events anywhere, an idea that would allow these fortunate people to give back in a big way to the island they love so much. This dream became a reality and the 1st Annual Island Time Fishing Festival was born. And what an event it was!

From the minute of its inception everyone was ready to lend a hand, get involved, donate time, money or whatever they could to make this dream a reality. It was truly phenomenal to witness the making of a small charity event turn into the most successful event the island has ever produced.

The decision was easily made to make this first event benefit the Little Yellow School House of Isla Mujeres. The Little Yellow Schoolhouse is a non-profit school that assists local special needs children and their families. As there is limited government funding for these children it was a natural to make this school the benefactor. The event started out to be a fun fishing tournament to raise money for The Little Yellow Schoolhouse but it quickly took on a life of its own. Through the efforts of several Nashville country music artists and executives, such as singer/songwriter Phil Vassar, Sony music executive Renee Bell, Emmy Award winner Tim Nichols and many others, support for this event quickly grew. The event then became not only a fishing tournament but a music festival as well, with Nashville’s finest singer/songwriters performing each night. The word quickly spread, more and more people wanted to be involved. Our goal of 20 boat entries was quickly met and the nightly entertainment was outstanding. The event was a true success with net profits exceeding $30,000USD.

The fishing was legendary and the party never ended…

The non-profit organization Help A special Child, Inc. was formed in 2010 to ensure the continuation of this wonderful cause. The Board of Directors wishes to thank all those who volunteered and contributed to making this such a successful event for these very special kids. We look forward to your support and contributions for the continued success of this event!

Cheers,

Water, water everywhere

Back in the 60s, world famous French explorer Jacques Cousteau brought attention to the little fishing island of Cozumel, singing its praises and declaring its beauty to the world. Since then, Cozumel has gained a reputation as a Mexico vacation spot with something for everyone, from adventurous kayakers, snorkelers and deep-sea divers to those looking for relaxing days on white beaches who may have never seen (or want to see!) a paddle or a snorkel.

For the water sports fan, sparkling waters teeming with exotic marine life await, whether as part of a tour or for exploring on your own. If you’re more of a sightseer, though, there’s plenty to see!

Not just a Mexico vacation spot…a whole new world

Cozumel combines old world traditions, Mayan history and a true passion for celebrating the botanical, marine and wildlife that makes its home on the island and provides a memorable respite from the world “back home.”

Chankanaab Park exemplifies everything that makes Cozumel so special; Chankanaab Lagoon, the exquisite natural aquarium known around the world, features the world’s only inland coral reef formation, along with dozens of species of marine life.

Punta Sur Light House, another spectacular island attraction, again showcases the exquisite wildlife and rich Mayan history of this Mexican vacation spot. Then there’s “Discover Mexico,” one of the island’s newest attractions, which offers a perfect afternoon for the archaeology and history buffs hoping to gain a deeper appreciation for their host city.

Enduring history, captivating wildlife

As far as vacation spots in Mexico go, Cozumel, with its soul of natural beauty and tradition, is one of the most diverse and rewarding locales for a place that will give any traveler the vacation of their dreams.
