About

Who I am and Why I Write

Close your eyes and remove yourself from the everyday. Picture your toes sinking into the sand as the waves kiss your ankles and listen to the coconut palms rustle in the gentle sea breeze. That’s a nice feeling isn’t it? I live a little bit of that life and want to share my tropical dreams with you.

Me tatMy name is Ryan and I hale from the land-locked, can’t get any further from the ocean, state of Kansas. I moved to laid back southwest Florida back in 2001 and have never looked back. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Kansas City area and am a huge Chiefs and Jayhawks fan (Royals too but it’s difficult) but the coastal life was calling. Kind of like Kenny Chesney’s “island boy” song. You thought I was going to say his “On the coast of somewhere beautiful” song didn’t you? That song is about a girl, doesn’t really fit now does it.

I write because I’m passionate about the tropical lifestyle and it’s my way to share it with you. If it has anything to do with the islands, the Caribbean, or umbrella drinks, I’m going to write about it or pass along interesting info I find to you. What a great guy I am right? What can I say, I aim to please.

You can find a treasure chest of great photos, videos and other salt life entertainment on my Facebook fan page, Facebook.com/RumShopRyan and if you really want to read what’s going down in my world you can follow me on Twitter, Twitter.com/RumShopRyan.

Why RumShopRyan

Artist Depiction of a Barbaos Rum ShopWhy the name RumShopRyan? Because rum is good and it makes me happy. Any questions? Seriously though i chose the name because of what a rum shop is. On Barbados rum is king. They have places called rum shops were friends come to socialize or “lime” as the call it. People from all walks of life just conversing over a flask of rum as equals. That’s what I want RumShopRyan to be, a place for beach loving people to come and share their love of the salt life.

Hi Ryan,

Drop me a line whenever you are coming to Barbados and let’s share a flask.

Do you do any freelance work? We are looking to work with a few people like yourself that are passionate about the Caribbean.

I write because I have to. My wife Vicki (ParrotHeadPost) helped me find my heart in the Caribbean. We married on Grand Turk and had our honeymoon on Jost van Dyke where she in found a message in a bottle. That led to my childrens book Maddie and Mook and The Message in The Bottle. Hopefully that will lead to us being able to share the island life with children everywhere.

I like your site Ryan. I look forward to hearing what you have to say, buuuuut, sorry I hear you about the Royals. Iolo. I am a Yankee fan. The good part about that is it can be fun to have the good hearted ribbing that goes along with fans of other teams.

Hi RC, thanks for the comment! A Yankee fan huh…I really can’t talk any smack because my team sucks so bad. How about go Boston! lol.

It sounds like you and your wife love the islands as much as I do and have created some special memories there. Good for you guys. Would love to hear more about your adventures. Cheers!
