A couple years ago I did an interview with the owner of Bones Rum, Matt Razook. That story has been extremely popular for a long time due to popularity of this Virgin Island rum. So on my most recent trip to the USVI I stopped in to the Bones Rum store on St. Thomas for a new bottle and that’s where I met the new owners, Wayne and Cara Adolphsen from Kansas City. What are the odds.
It was a rainy day on St. Thomas and we just finished eating at Big Kahuna’s Rum Shack on the waterfront. We were ducking in and out of stores, browsing and staying out of the rain. But I only had one store on my radar, that was the one that had the black sign with a skull and crossbones and words that read, “Bones- Virgin Islands Rum.”
I walk in and am instantly like a kid in a candy store. Only I’m a big kid in a rum store. Bottles of rum line the wall along with t-shirts, hats, key chains, hot sauces and even an umbrella (that would have actually came in handy)–all branded with the stylish Bones Rum logo. I wanted one of everything! I was getting that worried look from pirate girl Erin because she knows I can be loose with money. I toned down my excitement and decided to only purchase a cool Bones Rum t-shirt. We already had a bottle of Bones Rum at the hotel that Castaways Lorrie and Mike graciously donated to our group.
Upon check out, (and a couple rum samples) I asked the lady behind the counter if the owner Matt was in. “No, Matt is no longer the owner, but you can meet the new owners, they are right behind you.”
I turn around and introduce myself to Wayne and Cara, the new owners of Bones Rum. They knew of the previous story I had written about Bones Rum and we quickly got to talking about the brand and its future. I asked where they were from, and when the words Kansas City left their month my jaw bounced off the sidewalk. Shocked, I told them I was a Kansas City native as well and that I bleed Jayhawk blue and Chiefs red. We all became instant friends.
It really is amazing how small the world is and that so many Kansas people either start businesses that focus on the Caribbean or move to its shores. I guess that happens when your landlocked in the middle of the US.
Wayne, Cara and I talk a little more and take some photos. They graciously donate a bottle of Bones Rum to our group and we say our good-byes. I left with a smile on my face and great story to tell.
I know a lot of you are crazy about Bones Rum and want to know how you can get your hands on some. This is what I found out.
They are getting ready to ship to the BVI’s with distribution starting in Tortola. From there it will start moving throughout the BVI. Wayne and Cara are also working on US distribution, but getting US distribution is a long tedious process. The ball is rolling though and I’ll let you know of the progress.
If you haven’t tried Bones Rum yet you’re missing out. It has a smooth sweet taste with a nice bite at the end. The lasting flavor will keep you satisfied until your next sip. It really is a good rum, but as of right now you can only purchase it at their stores on St. Thomas and St. John. So when you’re on island stop in to one of their stores, grab a bottle and say hello to Wayne and Cara.
Their website, www.BonesRum.com is coming and you can follow them on Facebook here.
Smooth Rum for the Rough Seas…I’ll drink to that!

Where is the Bones Rum store located on St. Thomas? There is NO information on their FB page and their website is not up and running! We’ll be on St. Thomas in about 2 weeks and would love to pick up a bottle!
That was some good rum! I look forward to it coming to the US!
Kathy, it’s located right on the waterfront in Charlotte Amelia. Hard to describe what it’s by because there’s so much right there. If you open up Google Maps of St. Thomas and type in Bones Rum it will show you exactly where it’s at. But if you are walking along the main waterfront road you can’t miss it. Cheers!
Thank you!!!! I’m familiar with that area. I was hoping the store was in Havensight, as we’ll be on a cruise and stopping on St. Thomas. I’ll try to make my way over to Bones……….that is, if I’m not too buzzed from Duffy’s Love Shack!!!!!
Have fun Kathy! I know how Duffy’s can be…enjoy that Lime in da Coconut! Cheers!
